Roundtable Recap: Illuminate AI Leads the Conversation on GenAI in Financial Services
Senior leaders gather at Claridge’s to sharpen AI strategy in exclusive Microsoft-backed event

On Thursday 26 June 2025, Illuminate AI hosted a private executive dinner at Claridge’s in central London, bringing together a curated group of senior leaders to tackle a pressing question: what’s next for Generative AI in UK financial services?
The intimate roundtable, titled AI Opportunities in 2025 for Financial Services, was co-hosted with Microsoft and held under Chatham House Rule to allow for candid, peer-level discussion.
Leaders from some of the UK’s most established banks, global insurers and financial networks were around the table, all bringing different perspectives from institutions with deep legacy systems, complex customer demands and a sharp focus on modernising at pace. The discussion reflected the priorities of firms shaping the future of retail banking, international brokerage and specialist underwriting.
The Microsoft View: What’s Working, What’s Next
Jamie Bulmer, Microsoft’s Business Applications Financial Services Director, kicked off the evening with a sharp keynote on what’s being done, not just discussed. He shared real-world case studies that highlighted where GenAI has already started to shift the dial for efficiency, compliance, and client experience.
Rather than blue-sky speculation, Jamie kept it grounded: which patterns are emerging across successful AI implementations, where cautious experimentation is paying off, and how executive alignment has made the difference between stalled pilots and scaled wins. His core message landed clearly: 2025 won’t be about whether to use GenAI, but about how smartly and securely you apply it.
The group reflected on this with a range of one-word responses to describe the state of GenAI today: ambitious, excited, capable, buried, accelerated, focused, curious. One term, ‘interloper’ stood out, highlighting the cultural shift GenAI brings from a non-technical perspective. The leadership challenge now isn’t just adoption but deciding how to lead through it.
While many firms have already rolled out tools like Microsoft Copilot internally, questions remain around usage versus impact – a key recurring theme throughout the evening.
Real Talk: What It’ll Take to Win With AI
Following the keynote, dinner was served and so was the real discussion. Hosted by Leadership Director and Coach, Kirsty Mac, the roundtable brought together voices from banks, insurers, and tech firms. Illuminate AI’s CEO Billy Lyle and Sales Director Jess Williams, were also present, contributing expert insights and ideas to the conversation. The theme? Getting serious about GenAI’s value.
A clear theme across the discussion was AI FOMO—leaders feeling pressure to act, both from competitors and from experimentation happening inside their own organisations. But while ambition is high, many still lack clarity on where GenAI will genuinely move the needle. That gap between intent and impact often comes down to a lack of AI fluency at the top. Jess remarked, “The firms who win will be the ones who know what they want out of AI and have the leadership to steer it that way.”
A few other notable themes from the group included:
- Legacy thinking remains a blocker, described as “lava” – bubbly and exciting at first, but once it seizes up, it’s near impossible to get it moving again.
- Post-COVID agility has encouraged forward-thinking adoption of new technology.
- There’s growing attention on AI’s impact on offshore models, workforce structures, and leadership roles.
One Room, Multiple FSI Leaders, No Noise
What stood out across the evening wasn’t just the calibre of people in the room, but the honesty of the conversation. The format of the evening – an intimate roundtable and private dining experience – meant each person’s voice was heard, and everyone left with sharper thinking. The closing note of the evening echoed a clear shared sentiment: AI isn’t a tech initiative anymore. It’s a leadership priority. And the ones who treat it that way in 2025 are setting themselves up to be a frontier business as AI continues to advance at breakneck speed.
